MODERNISASI DAN REFORMASI PESANTREN: SEBAGAI USAHA PREVENTIF MENJAGA CITRA PESANTREN DI INDONESIA

Islamic boarding schools in Indonesia face the challenges of modernization, which affect their image and public trust. The widespread negative reporting and the emergence of rigid religious practices demand modernization and reform of these schools as a preventive measure. This effort is important to keep pesantrens relevant without losing their identity and traditional values. The purpose of this study is to describe the modernization and reform of pesantrens as a preventive effort to maintain their image in Indonesia. This study uses a qualitative-descriptive approach, specifically employing library research. The data collection technique is based on articles, proceedings, e-books, repositories, and other reliable sources. Data analysis uses Miles and Huberman's data analysis techniques, which include data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing or verification (Sugiono, 2017). The results of this study indicate that the modernization and reform of pesantren play an important role in maintaining their image and relevance in Indonesia. These efforts encourage educational innovation, strengthening socio-economic contributions, and preserving the historical and cultural identity of pesantren. The success of this modernization and reform requires a collaborative approach among policymakers, educators, and the community. This study has implications for the importance of formulating policies and strategies for managing pesantren that are oriented toward modernization and sustainable reform, without neglecting the values, traditions, and identity of pesantren. These findings can serve as a reference for madrasa administrators and policymakers in maintaining their image and increasing public trust. Modernization and reform of madrasa are strategic preventive steps to safeguard the image, relevance, and sustainability of madrasas in Indonesia amid the challenges of social change and the development of the times.
